Toy Soldiers

In 2011, I joined forces with the creative minds of Matthew Roche (writer) and Mike Hayes (director) to produce the short film, Toy Soldiers.

Sixteen year-old Shane finds himself in the reluctant position of baby-sitter to his kid brother Charlie while his mother is at work. Along with Shane’s best mates – Bean and Hally – their small rural town is the jungle gym where they spend most of their days. When Shane makes a seemingly innocuous discovery one day, his and Charlie’s lives are changed forever.

We applied for and won a grant from Film Offaly. One of the requirements of the grant was to film locally. We chose the town of Tullamore, ninety minutes from Dublin. This was a great opportunity to work with local people as part of our cast and crew. And provide business to the hotels, restaurants and other local industries.

It was an amazing experience. Tullamore is a very friendly and obliging community that bent over backwards to help us wherever they could.

After months of pre-production, a week long shoot and several more months of editing and sound design, the film was in the can. And so began, in 2012, our journey round the festival circuit.
